The swim course parallels the path of the Madeline Island Ferry for most of the 2.1 miles.
Spectators can watch the start of the race, then take the ferry over to the island and get a view of the race as it spreads out across the lake. The ferry landing dock on Madeline is about 3/4 miles from the finish.
Event organizers will offer bus transportation from the ferry dock to the finish line so that spectators can watch the end of the race, but we strongly encourage spectators to walk. Extremely fast swimmers (under 50:00) might actually beat the ferry over, we will do our best to get their friends and loved ones to the finish line in time to see them finish!
Get more information about information, prices, and schedules for the Madeline Island Ferry online or call 715-742-2051.

- Packet Pickup is from 2:00-10:00pm. All swimmers must pick up their own packet in person.

If you're driving, Wild Rice Retreat is located just south of Bayfield. Turn towards the lake on Old San Rd and follow the signs and parking instructions. If you're walking or biking, please be aware that the Brownstone Trail is damaged. Slumping and erosion has occurred and the trail is completely gone in one area, leaving deep and gaping hole. To help keep people safe and prevent additional damage, Landmark Conservancy has closed this section of the trail and asks residents and visitors to use the reroute along Highway 13.
Please contact [email protected] or 715-779-5408 with any questions.

COURSE INFORMATION - PRE-COVID
There are no refunds, transfers, or credits. We recommend cancellation insurance.
The course is a straight 2.1 mile swim on Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island. The course follows the same route of the winter ice road, starting at the beach at the end of Washington Ave in Bayfield. It is approximately parallel to the route of the Madeline Island Ferry, finishing about 3/4 mile north of the ferry dock.
Swimmers will start in waist deep water and finish at the water’s edge. Large buoys will mark the course every 1/3 mile. For safety reasons, you will be expected to swim along the marked course and may be steered back on course by a safety paddler if necessary.
Swimmers have encountered all of Lake Superior's moods over the years, from calm, flat water to strong crosswinds with 2 foot waves. This event is registered with and approved by the US Coast Guard. US Coast Guard and US Coast Guard Auxiliary boats will monitor and patrol the event as a component of the Safety Team.

We have practice every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the Bayfield Rec Center, beginning Monday, October 7, 2019.
Because of pool scheduling changes we will have some practice time overlap this year. The schedule is:
During the overlap times the older group will begin their warmups and practices and they will also be working one-on-one or in small groups to mentor the younger swimmers. This reinforces skill techniques for the older swimmers, gives the younger swimmers a chance to learn from someone close to their own age, and starts to build a bond between team members so that they work together and help each other at meets and any other events that may occur.
Note that the coaches may reassign a swimmer to a different practice group based on ability.
